Makeup Forever Smoky Lash Mascara – Kate Moss

A long time before Kate Moss became the icon she is today, she was famous for a different look. And a different lifestyle, but that is a whole other story.

Her look was topic of heated discussion, it was called the “heroin chic”, basically because the models looked like they were drug addicts with dark, smudged eye makeup, pale faces and very (very!) thin, androgynous bodies. Artistic expression versus healthy body image, Kate Moss versus Claudia Schiffer, the discussion took over print media and school break chat, and I, starting to embrace makeup at the tender age of 15, was right in the middle.

Given my complexion and body type it soon became obvious that I would always be Team Claudia, willing or not, because I at least had a (very, very) small resemblance to her and would never ever qualify as androgynous.

But still these images made a huge impression, one that I can still see now, twenty years later, in my makeup preferences.

Case in point? I am drawn to everything labelled “smoky”. So it was about time I tried the Makeup Forever Smoky Lash mascara.

A mascara that gives the lashes curl, volume, length and intense pigment. This ultra-pigmented mascara was specially designed to give the lashes an exceptional volume-enhancing effect with infinite lengthening and immediate curling.

Prize and size

One tube contains 6,5 g and retails for 23$ on the Sephora website here. The wand is a thick, dense bristle brush as pictured below.

Texture and smell

Wet mascara is my pet peeve. I have been known to open mascara and let it sit there for six weeks untouched so it could dry down. Thankfully the Makeup Forever Smoky Lash mascara is dry enough for my liking upon first application. There is no scent I can detect, but then again I don´t usually sniff my mascaras, so I guess I wouldn´t notice.

Application and effects

Here is what I work with: My lashes are of middle length, they do look short without mascara because they have blond tips, have a little curl, but nothing fancy and are of normal volume. Average is a good description.

One coat on the eye to your left

Here you can see one coat on my right eye (at your left in the picture). It gives volume, intense black color and adds a little length. It does have a tendency for spider lashes that is already noticeable here.

Several coats as I like it. The lashes are dark, it adds volume and some length (not infinite though), but it gives serious spider lashes.

It is important to say that this is not a waterproof mascara and that it can smudge on me if it is very humid outside or I exercise. Not many mascaras do that, so be careful if you have very watery eyes.

Does it live up to its claims?

Most of them.

It is amazing at darkness and volume, I do think there are better ones out there for length though. As my lashes do have a curl naturally I can´t really vouch for the curling effect this would have on straight lashes, but it does not weigh the lashes down.

Would I repurchase?

This mascara does sit in the “I like” pile, but as it isn´t really a budget option and I have others in the “I love” pile, I don´t see it happening immediately. My Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Maximum Volume mascara (Review) still is the number one.

Who do I recommend it to?

People that don´t mind spider lashes and look for volume over length.

And people still influenced by mid 90s makeup.

And by the way, if you want to see me without Makeup, here is a vlog I published this morning:
